Whilst NVMe SSDs connected via PCIe might be king in terms of speed, attaching SATA SSDs to your Raspberry Pi 5 via USB 3.0 is still a great option with up to 5Gbps. This X1100 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD add-on from SupTronics allows you to make use of any 2.5" SATA SSD/HDD drives you're no longer using - great for media server storage and similar projects.
The add-on supports standard 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs, offering fast data transfer speeds via its USB 3.0 port (up to 5Gbps). Designed to mount neatly beneath your Pi, the board includes mounting holes and a pack of standoffs, and a built-in LED showing read/write activity.
The X1100 is ideal for creating a media server or building your own NAS. You can also boot the operating system from your drive for quicker load times and better overall performance.
Raspberry Pi, SSD and Active Cooler not included
Important notes
- The Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C Power Supply is recommended, which provides up to 5A current at +5.1V to drive your hard drives
- If you are using a power supply that cannot provide 5A at +5V, setting usb_max_current_enable=1 in the /boot/firmware/config.txt file will override this and increases the USB current limit to 1.6A.
- USB 3.0 devices might generate radio frequency interference that can cause Wi-Fi and other wireless devices operating in the 2.4GHz band to have issues communicating with your Raspberry Pi 5. To avoid interference on the 2.4GHz band using Wi-Fi, try using the 5GHz band instead. If the problem still exists, consider turning off Wi-Fi and using a wired network instead.
